Trees Have Become

Part of the swirling ribbon
of sunsets, Golden Delicious apples,
and pumpkins that will be harvested
tomorrow.

Leaves spin on the breath
of the wind, precursors
of their dainty snowflake cousins,

cornucopias have stolen
summer's pride,
stranded corn ears lie
forlornly in a field,
crows herald the
cooling days.

Fall, the earth-toned arbor,
has crowned October
with a circlet of the sun
that tarnishes as
days shorten
into darkness.
